In this live demo, we’ll explore expressive portrait painting using wild colours, oversized brushes, and a fearless, loose approach. With Rockwell’s vibrant palette, you’ll learn to build dynamic faces through bold marks, unexpected hues, and joyful accidents.

We’ll focus less on perfect likeness and more on energy, emotion, wet-into-wet flow, blooms, drips, and soft lost edges. Discover how to balance punchy shadows with luminous colour to bring portraits to life. Recommended Course Materials:

Colors: Lorraine’s Favourites set recommended or bring your own bold, vibrant colours.

Paper: Baohong Hot Press watercolour paper (12 x 16″  or larger preferred) or your favourite 100% cotton paper and Master Block

Brushes: 

• Bring your biggest flat & round brushes (mop, large pointed, calligraphic brushes)
• The wilder, the better!
• Tip: Don’t be afraid to use a brush that feels too big for portraits.
• This is all about looseness and surprise.

Others:

• Masking fluid (optional, for saving highlights or experimenting with texture)
• Hair dryer (for speeding up drying between layers)
• Water containers (at least two) and Mixing palette
• Paper towel or rags, Pencil (for minimal sketching), and Kneaded eraser
• Spray bottle (optional, for extra water effects)
• Your usual watercolour kit (any other tools you love)
• Bring a playful spirit and a willingness to experiment.
